[Diary], 1874-1877.

Holograph journal of two journeys to Italy (1874 Nov-1875 Jun and 1877 Feb). The author, a Roman Catholic, rubricates Feast and Fast Days and takes particular note of the variable quality of church architecture and church services. He also comments on the main historical sites in Rome, the frequently bad weather, and the limitations of fellow travelers; and describes his brief audience with Pope Pius IX, "a nice looking old man, very fresh looking and good natured." The author, who resided at Goole Hall in Yorkshire, also toured Pompeii and Naples before returning home. The entries for the second journey are limited to his travel from Goole Hall to Turin.
